New Inspirations – Men’s Line to Launch Soon!

Beasty Bling Jewelry for MenMoving from New York City to Los Angeles, I’ve noticed the strong surf culture here. While there are definitely surfers on the East coast it just is not as prevalent. In Los Angeles, you see women and men, of all ages, with their gear almost all year round. It is a way of life when you live near the beach. In the early morning on a weekday, you can see surfers returning from the ocean, rinsing off with water from the back of their trucks (towels discreetly placed), changing into slacks and button-downs and heading to the office as a regular routine.  What a life!

I think that the sunshine, blue skies, the outdoor lifestyle and the people who live it, have shaken off the creative cobwebs and provided inspiration for my latest line of men’s jewelry, called DAWG.  As it turns out, the stones that I was attracted to at this year’s Tucson Gem Show were very masculine.  The colors and shapes were bold – mostly jaspers – striated jaspers in whites and browns, peppermint jasper in elongated oval shapes, pendants in greens and yellows; onyx, bright yellow African trade beads; even pearls.  It wasn’t long after that that I decided to make a men’s line inspired by the stones themselves and the men who live here.

I find that men on the West Coast are not afraid to adorn themselves as a way of expression.  After all, look at all the beautiful tattoos.  As I was working I really felt that what I was doing was a celebration of men. I wanted to see them in hip as well as dressy neckwear. Some of the collection is an attempt to replace or add to the subtle gold chain. Today, men are as aware as women of the importance of taking care of their bodies through exercise and diet and of course, fashion…whether it is hipster or surfer, casual or dressy men want to be attractive. There is an old saying that “the clothes don’t make the man” and that extends to jewelry as well.

And, if you happen to enjoy the company of a four legged friend - we have something special for your pooch too.  Beasty Bling, neckwear for pets is designed so that your dog can be as unique and expressive as you.  The new pet jewelry designs would befit a beach dog for any occasion; barbeque, sailing or a beach side wedding.

The picture above is a sneak peak at the line. We are in the midst of uploading all the new products so check out the website soon!

July Birthstones: Rubies & Emeralds

Cancers are born between June 22 and July 22. The astrological sign for Cancer is the star and is represented by the emerald. The modern birthstone, the ayurvedic and mystical birthstones for the month of July are unanimously ruby; both wonderful choices.

Emerald is the most familiar gem in the “beryl” mineral family and tends to be one of the most expensive.  It gets its intense green color from the presence of chromium.  In ancient mythology, the emerald was associated with the planet Mercury who was the messenger of the gods and therefore, is used as a protective talisman for travelers.  In ancient Rome, the stone was associated with Venus and was viewed as a symbol of fertility.

Today, some spiritualists believe that emerald is in alignment with the heart chakra, the source of emotions and particularly love and compassion.  It is believed that the stone can help the wearer to stay centered in the heart’s wisdom and on a more physical level; the emerald can heal disease and imbalance in the heart. Interesting that the other stone associated with the month of July has influence on the heart.

Rubies and sapphires are scientifically referred to as corundum. Next to diamonds, they are the hardest mineral known. The name comes from the Latin “Rubeus” meaning red.  Rubies range in color from a purple/red to the most sought after “ruby” red. Here too, the ruby gets its color from traces of chromium, but its chemical composition produces red rather than the green of emeralds.

The Greeks called it the mother of all gemstones and Aristotle said of rubies, “One of them is red like blood and is called rubinus. This is the best one of all.” All other colors of corundum are considered sapphires.  Because of the color and its association to blood, rubies are naturally thought to strengthen the heart and circulation and combat low blood pressure.  In relation to the heart, rubies are believed to attract love and are also associated with courage, passion and vitality.

June Birthstones: Alexandrite, Pearl & Moonstone

Beasty Bling Pearl NecklaceAstrologically, June is primarily devoted to the zodiac sign of Gemini which runs from May 21-June 20. The zodiac stones for June include agate, chrysoprase, pearl, citrine, chalcedony and white sapphire. The contemporary birthstones are alexandrite, moonstone and pearl. The birthstone system we are most familiar with today was developed by the American National Association of Jewelers in 1912. However, the original concept goes as far back as 3000 BC.

Metaphysical Qualities of Pearl: Whether cultured or freshwater, pearls are considered to offer the power of love, money, protection and luck.  What more do you need?  Ancient legends mention that pearls were thought to be the tears of the gods.  Beautiful pearls have a shimmering iridescence which is referred to as luster.  The best way to care for your pearls is to wear them.  Rubbing up against the skin keeps them from drying out…so keep them close.

A Brief History on Birthstones

Breast Plate of AaronThe birthstone system we are most familiar with today was developed by the American National Association of Jewelers in 1912. However, the original concept goes as far back as 3000 BC.

Many believe that the Breastplate of Aaron is the basis for the origin of birthstones (also known as natal stones). As described in several biblical texts, Aaron is said to be the brother of Moses and was appointed as high priest. The instructions for fabricating the Breastplate are in Exodus 28, 15-30: and call for the twelve stones of the Twelve Tribes of Israel to be set in four rows.  The gemstones corresponded to the zodiac.

Exodus 28:16-21 – “It is to be square – a span long and a span wide – and folded double. Then mount four rows of precious stones on it.

* In the first row there shall be a ruby, a topaz and a beryl

* In the second row a turquoise, a sapphire and an emerald

* In the third row a jacinth, and agate and a amethyst

* In the fourth row a chrysolite, and onyx and a jasper

Early civilizations believed that the planets played a significant role in their daily lives. Planets were thought to influence different stones and the stones would influence the wearer.  Traditionally, gems were associated with each sign of the zodiac based on a color system, as color was thought to unleash the power attributed to the stone. These pairings were what we know today as natal stones, and while many people today choose to follow the contemporary birthstone chart, there are those who still follow the zodiac tradition.

Different countries with different cultures sometimes have their own birthstone charts which are completely different from the U.S.  The modern concept of the birthstone generally relates to the month we were born in.

Beasty Bling Reveals Latest Cat Jewelry Designs

Margot wearing Beasty Bling Cat JewelryThese days, dogs have been getting all the attention, but have we forgotten about our other domesticated companion, the cat? At Beasty Bling, we are going to be focusing on creating more cat jewelry accessories; we hope this line will be a main stay for the company moving forward.

There is an unexplainable fulfillment and human curiosity we experience when we spend time with cats, which is probably why the Ancient Egyptians first started to domesticate wildcats from Africa in 3500 BC. Ever since, these beautiful, graceful, powerful hunters have held an honored place in the home.  In Egypt, these domesticated wildcats were treasured pets and can be seen in artwork as hunters, killing rodents and snakes.  Interesting that cats were first referred to in Egypt as Myeo or Mau -  similar to the sound cat’s today make “meow.”

The domesticated cat continued to evolve and by 1500 BC, in Egypt cats were so loved and revered that if a pet cat died, the owner would shave their eyebrows as a symbol of grief and would mummify their pet.   If a house caught fire, the rule went like this—cats first, humans second.  Cats were so highly regarded that over 300,000 cat mummies were discovered in one excavation during the 1800s, outnumbering human mummies by far.  Even mice were mummified so that the cats would have something to eat in the afterlife.

We shouldn’t be afraid to dress our cats as we would our dogs – the Ancient Egyptians did it! Besides, it’s a rare pup that can make pet accessories look as regal as a feline can. Sure your cat won’t wag its tail and lick your face in appreciation, but I’m sure you will get more cuddle time.

Consumers Still Spending on Pets in Recession

Trends in the pet market show pets are more like family.

Beasty Bling Pet Jewelry April 4, 2010 (Los Angeles, Calif.) – According to the American Pet Products Association’s (APPA) 2009/2010 National Pet Owners Survey, owners are embracing their pets as true members of the American family. This could be a contributing factor to why spending in the pet market, despite the recession, saw an increase from $43.2 billion in 2008 to $45.5 billion in 2009. Spending in 2010 is expected to reach $47.7 billion. Companies such as Beasty Bling, a high-end pet jewelry brand, and DOG Boutique, a lush West Hollywood pet product retailer, are seeing sales increase.

“We love our pets as we do our children, and what parent wouldn’t make sure that their child’s needs were met before theirs,” said Kate Noto, designer and CEO of Beasty Bling. “Purchasing items such as pet jewelry doesn’t seem like a sacrifice because we get so much pleasure from pampering our pets.”

In the same survey, the APPA points out trends to look for in 2010: big name companies offering lines of pet products; an increase in pet product retailers; upscale and couture pet accessories; pet grooming and pet friendly hotels among others. While most will be spending an estimated $18.28 billion on pet food, pet supply purchases come in second at $11.01 billion.

“Purchasing an occasional toy or sweater for your pet brings you more pleasure and less guilt than purchasing something for yourself,” said Chris Price, owner of DOG Pet Boutique in West Hollywood.  “Customers are also purchasing pet products that make living with a pet easier.”

As owners give so much to their four legged companions, the favors are not going unreturned. The APPA lists studies on the health benefits of pets. People who own pets have lower health care costs and fewer doctor visits, pets can help fight depression, prevent heart disease and can lower your blood pressure.

Summer Inspirations

Beasty Bling Oyster NecklaceThe sun, sky and ocean all remind me of summer, and are frequently reflected in the stones I choose to wear and design with. I like to design with stones I consider warm weather material.  The choice of stone also has to do with the intensity of color, but since that is also a ‘mood’ element (subjective), there is no hard and fast rule.

The gemstones or semi-precious stones that come to mind are turquoise, coral, bright lapis (not deep blue unless it is just an accent), delicate or quirky shaped pearls. Also, I like contrasts; crisp black and white jade, yellows – colors that are intense. Here is a cute turquoise pet jewelry piece and a turquoise bracelet. This is a crisp black and white jade pet jewelry piece.

Coral makes for interesting beads.  Due to the fact that coral originates from a “living material” like a pearl, it is not scientifically considered a gemstone, but based on popular thinking for hundreds of years, it’s categorized as such. Coral is the skeleton of an animal called “coral polyp” which is almost plantlike and that is why sometimes you see it in its branch-like form.  Otherwise, it is carved or fashioned into beads.

There is a wide range of coral colors including white, flesh pink, pale to deep rose red, salmon and red to dark red.  The deep red color coral is referred to as “oxblood” and has been highly prized and most desirable in the Mediterranean where it is produced. This Beasty Bling for People necklace, I used both turquoise and coral.  Light pink coral is often referred to as “angel skin.”  There is black coral which comes primarily from Hawaii.  Taiwan is a big distributor of coral as well.

The pearl is another “non-gem” gemstone.  It too is the result of an organic process that yields one of my favorite beads.  The variety in shape, color, and luster is enormous.  The color that we observe in a pearl – pink, white, cream, black – is called the “body color” and there is often a second color that is referred to as the overtone color or orient.

As an example, white or cream color pearls do not have an overtone color, a pinkish colored pearl is a pink overtone on a white background.  There can be black pearls with a metallic overtone.   There are salt-water pearls which are formed by nature and very rare or cultured pearls which are the result of human intervention when a mother of pearl bead is inserted into the tissue of an oyster. Nacre, or mother of pearl, accumulates around the bead ultimately producing a pearl.

Both saltwater and freshwater pearls consist of the same material and can form in “baroque” or irregular shapes. It is very difficult to know whether a given pearl was saltwater or freshwater in origin.

Some cultured pearls that are used in Beasty Bling pieces are:

Keshi pearls are sometimes referred to as “cornflake”, petals, seed pearls or poppy seed which is what the Japanese word Keshi means. Keshi maybe freshwater or salt water and result from the oyster spitting out the bead before the process forms a complete pearl resulting in small odd shapes and a much brighter luster. Seen above is a Beasty Bling for People oyster necklace.

Biwa pearls are produced at lake Biwa, Japan using freshwater clams. They are produced in irregular shapes; often in the shape of a stick, a cross, rectangle, nugget and coin shaped. Instead of a bead, a small square of mother of pearl is inserted into the clam. Here is a Beasty Bling for People pearl necklace that are rectangular in shape.

Probably the most common freshwater pearl on the market is the Chinese freshwater baroque, some of which are crinkily and look like what I call rice krispies — seen here in this Beasty Bling for People pearl necklace.

Pet Fashion: New York Vs. Los Angeles

Daisy smiles for the camera at Beasty Bling eventAs a pet owner who recently moved from New York City to the Los Angeles area, it has been quite a change for me and I think an even bigger (and better) change for my dog and cat.  New York City is generally ‘high rise’ living and just to make it out the front of the building is an experience.  It begins with the elevator ride; one always wonders whether you’ll get on with a friendly neighbor or the vicious dog from the next floor, or the little kid who is completely terrified even though they are bigger and scarier than many of the dogs.  In many buildings they have people elevators where dogs are not allowed.

Limited indoor living space and cold weather make it more difficult to have a dog in New York City. I know first-hand, it’s not fun walking or exercising your dog in the rain and cold. Regardless of the weather, New York is “destination” oriented. New Yorkers are generally in a hurry to get somewhere, even if it’s for pleasure. In Los Angeles, there is a slower pace of living and more desire to stop and smell the roses, so to speak.  The sun and milder climate of California impels people to spend time outdoors and with them come their pets.

I’ve always taken note of pet accessories and products. In New York, one may see fancy collars and sweaters or jackets during the cold weather – even on some of the bigger dogs – but that’s the extent of “pet fashion.”  In the winter, because of the snow, sometimes you see dogs wearing booties to protect their feet from the salted walkways. Perhaps it was the territory I would cover in my daily life, but most New Yorkers don’t seem to go for the “glam” of pet fashion. Even the dog carriers, an opportunity to sport another designer item, don’t show up much.

With the exception of exercising their dogs, New Yorkers leave their dogs home. Dogs tend not to be part of the social fabric in the way that dogs are on the West Coast. As a result, West Coasters have more opportunity to show off their pooch in the latest pet fashion. I do think it is the smaller dogs that get dressed, but all size dogs deserve to be fashion plates.
